I spent the rest of the day interviewing lackluster candidates. Some had portfolios with average-looking work, and some showed me nothing but a bunch of half-baked drawings. And then there were the ones who didn’t have a portfolio at all. Nothing to showcase their skills. Whatever happened to hard work and actually earning a job?

There was one more applicant on my schedule before I could get caught up on paperwork and finally order the new furniture. Fin had connections to expedite it, so we wouldn’t be waiting a month to get the new tables and chairs, but I still needed to actually place the order.

Carver Wilson walked into the shop at exactly four o’clock. He was a big guy, but not like that meathead from earlier. I had a feeling he’d earned his muscles the old-fashioned way. His brown skin was covered with ink on one arm only, and he had a tribal tattoo that wrapped around his right eye.

He stepped up to the front desk, and I extended my hand. “Carver?”

“Yes, ma’am. I guess you’re Katie.”

I shook his surprisingly slender hand. “Do you mind if we talk over a cup of coffee or tea across the street?” I figured I’d take him over to Lou’s because the residual energy in the new space was too toxic from all the bad interviews I’d conducted since Kali left that morning. I also needed some fresh air.

“No objections here.”

We walked over to Lou’s and ordered our drinks before grabbing my favorite booth, the one facing the shop. “I hope it’s not too weird doing this in a diner.”

He shook his head and gave me an inviting smile. “I just came from an interview where I had to sit next to the boss while he tattooed his client. Try talking to someone who isn’t even looking at you.” He laughed. “Then he expected me to finish the job so he could see how I worked. Didn’t even ask his client if it was okay.”

“No shit?” I cupped my mouth. “Sorry.”

He laughed again. “No problem. I was raised by a sailor.”

Carver was the only applicant to provide a link to his portfolio on his own website before the interview. It was clever and allowed me to look at his work without having him stare at me from across the table. It also showed me he was tech savvy, which could come in handy when we opened the new and improved MagicInk and upgraded our computer system. Other than Kali, he was also the only applicant to attach a well-written résumé that wasn’t full of fluff. Just the pertinent information.

“I looked at your work. It’s edgy.”

His brows pulled together. “Is that good?”

“Oh yeah. I really liked it.” I took a sip of my tea as my eyes discreetly traveled over his large arms. You’d think someone his size would be like a bull in a china shop in a tight space like MagicInk, even with the extra room. But I’d seen videos of linebackers doing yoga, and it was surprising how limber and graceful they could be.
